How likely is a new X-Files movie?

With the apocalypse fast approaching, I can't help thinking that this would have been the perfect year for one final X-Files movie to hit theaters. The aliens are practically at our doorstep.

While "I Want to Believe" was not very well-received, I still hold out hope that one day we'll see one more adventure, to finally bring closure to the whole alien conspiracy once and for all.

I mean, how many of us even thought that "I Want to Believe" would be made? It didn't even come out until the show had been off the air for 6 years! I know that Gillian Anderson has somewhat recently said in interviews that she would totally be up for another film.

Truthfully, I am totally fine with "The Truth" being the finale to the series, but if there's a chance for one more movie, I would be more than willing to see it.

Didn't I Want to Believe bomb at the box office?

I know when I went to see it, I was the only one in the theater, and I used a movie cash coupon to get into it.

Duchovny and Anderson are both willing, but I don't think we'll ever see another one unless Carter agrees to let somebody else write and/or direct. I ended up really liking I Want to Believe after repeat viewings, but it's just not what a studio is looking for right now in order to make a profit.

I don't even know why Fox bothered. THey should have simply produced a tv movie or a 4 hour tv miniseries. Why they haven't tried this to return to an environment that did really embrace the series is beyond me.

Is vastly cheaper, and between WW home markets, WW tv markets, it would be very difficult to not generate revenue.

I still don't know why they use such a small scale monster of the week plot for the second movie. No wonder there was so little interest! :p

Because they were limited dramatically in production budget.

Fox was never going to give that project a even low level budget. I mean it wasn't art house level budget, but it was high end low budget film making.

In comparison TNG films which weren't Big Budget films, or even lower end medium budget films, had two to two and half times the budget (and that wasn't even with inflation) Carter had to work with.

Firefly's film had a larger budget. Nearly ten million more.

The film was kept so under wraps that when the bad reviews started coming out, there was no interest in the film. Terrible marketing strategy.

I would love to see a third "X-Files" movie and like mentioned already both David and Gillan have stated they would be interested and willing to return for one more kick at the can. I believe that they've basically said that it is up to Carter to come up with a story and Fox if they're interested. I don't see it likely though.

Well the only point of doing one would be to cover the December 2012 invasion date as revealed in "The Truth." (as I think Carter or Duchovny or someone did say it would be about if it happened after the second movie came out)

But seen as it's August 2012 now... erm I think it's a bit late. What's the point of a doing a film about the 2012 date after 2012?
Also it would probably cost a fair bit of dollar to do it justice, which after the last one bombed I can't see FOX coughing up the cash to be honest.

Yeah, count me in as wanting to a see a third (and obviously final) film. More alien cover-ups and Government conspiracies like the first though... or it's just not X-Files enough for me.

As great as it was to see Gillian and David, (Mitch too briefly) back together, I Want To Believe simply wasn't interesting enough a story to warrant being on the big screen. The first had some spectacle going for it, and somehow managed the impossible - pushing forward an ongoing story arc, while not completely baffling a first time audience.

Though they missed the perfect timing of having the movie come out around Christmas 2012 to coincide with the Mayan calendar and colonization on December 22, 2012, you could still have the movie take place after colonization has already begun and set the stage with a flashback montage and narration at the beginning of the movie.

    The factions would be:

    - Mulder/Scully/Other past allies/Vaccinated Humans and other survivors
    - The Syndicate (now fighting the aliens since they found out their plans were for human extinction and not just enslavement)
    - Human/Alien Hybrids
    - Non-Black-Oil-Infected Faceless Aliens/Resistance
    vs

    - Black Oil Aliens/Alien Bounty Hunters

We got a glimpse of what one possible outcome for Earth would be in 2040 with Mulder's hallucination/vision of the future in The Sixth Extinction II: Anor Fati:

So things probably don't completely go to hell right away, and it takes some time for the aliens to consolidate their forces (since they won't have the help of the Syndicate any more once the vaccine is more fully developed) and infect people en masse, and that time gives the human and alien resistance forces time to vaccinate more people and fight back.

You could even incorporate real-world events like saying colony collapse disorder among bees is the Syndicate trying to destroy the alien's black oil delivery system.

This was the "problem" with the second film. I use the quotes cause upon a few re-watches it is still a good X-Files entry, it's just not big screen worthy.

After waiting years for another film this was the route they chose to go? I was of the opinion that perhaps a second movie might even lead into establishing reasons to do the 2012 plot for a third film.

They would have to be filming or nearly done filming in order to have the movie ready by years end. At best if we get another film it'll not be tied to the 2012 conspiracy material sadly.

I would certainly go see another X-Files movie, even though the last one was terrible, IMHO.

Well, like Locutus of Bored said above, just because alien colonization begins on December 22nd doesn't necessarily mean the whole world goes to hell on that day. They've managed to stay relatively quiet for a long time, and I can see the colonization plan happening in much the same way. These guys are patient. Colonization could be happening right under our noses, and only people like Mulder and Scully have any idea what is really going on.

Not my fault FOX put out a bunch of DVDs with movie cash coupons before the movie came out.

Take a look at my posts in the movies seen in 2012 thread to get an idea of just how cheap I can be, though, especially now that I work for a movie theater chain!

I'd be shocked if there was ever another X-Files movie. I'd like one but I just don't see it happening.

I'd love another X-Files movie too, though more like the excellent first than the so-so second. I was also kinda hoping Scully and/or Mulder might guest on a Fringe episode, seen as the FBI's "X Division" was mentioned in an early episode. Certainly, several of Fringe's early episodes were very X-Files-esque and M&S would have fit in quite well. :D

I'd be surprised if we got another movie at this point, although there has been some talk of it moving forward from the actors. If the networks (including FOX) were still in the business of producing TV movies or miniseries, I'd suggest that format, but they're not in that business anymore. Even FX, which has rerun the show, doesn't dabble in anything like that.

That's how I felt about "I Want to Believe," and then it happened. David Duchovny has recently been interviewed saying that he's surprised a third movie hasn't been made yet.

Obviously, the longer we wait, the less likely it is, but I feel like enough of the cast and crew are interested in doing it that I am still willing to hold out hope.
