6 weeks on Monday till it comes out, I pre-ordered mine from Amazon £50.99.

The sampler disk looked fantastic and this is the most excited I have been about a Trek release for a very long time.

    This.

I've been itching to watch TNG again for ages, but have put it off until the BDs are released. Based on the sampler disc, this is going to be fantastic.

Pricing - I'm willing to pay more for better quality. Besides, I'll make sure to get rid of the DVDs beforehand to subsidize the season 1 set at least.

Just wanted to pass this along:

The following PDF’s from National CineMedia (Fathom) confirm that the Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th Anniversary Event on July 23rd will be broadcast using Fathom’s DCN (Digital Content Network) and shown on digital advertising projectors, not the primary 2K or 4K cinema projectors that films are shown on.

So you might want to save your $15 and put it toward the Blu-ray set the following day. ;)

I can see them doing that kind of "test run" with DS9 or VOY, to guage if there's really enough interest in restoring the whole series, but with TNG it's almost certain they'll release the whole thing. It's much more popular, and still doing well in syndication.

I'm kind of anticipating they will be available on Itunes. If I'm interested in these sets, that might be the route I go, since it will be cheaper.

I'll take the gamble. I'm not sure that CBS would allow their episodes to be broadcast poorly the day before the discs go on sale. This is, after all, a giant commercial intended to sway potential buyers.

I don't doubt for a second that they'll continue restoring DS9 and VOY and yes even ENT. Because as has been stated this is a huge asset for the rights owners, thus airing in syndication and streaming and everything else will make then that much more money when every episode of every series is in HD, because that's the norm nowadays. And the blu-rays are a bonus too.

They did exactly that with the Menagerie screenings a few years ago.

I don't remember anyone here complaining about the picture or sound quality. I may be misremembering. Hell, that's like renovating your home to sell it, then pissing on the floor right before potential buyers show up.

It didn't play in my neck of the woods...

There was LOTS of complaining. Do a search for "menagerie screening" and you'll find several topics on the matter. The image was extremely dark and pixelated, while the audio was mono and mixed poorly.

Then I would call the theater and ask to speak to the manager. Ask him/her directly (in a civil, friendly manner, of course) what projector is used to present the Fathom event on July 23rd: The cinema projector or advertising projector. Ask them what the make of the projector is, its resolution and the lumens/footcandles it puts out.

If they say it's the cinema projector, ask them if they will give you a full refund if you arrive on the day and find that they were wrong. Get this person's full name. Of course, you have to have the will power to walk away from the event if it's not what you expected. :)

$15 is a lot of money for a movie ticket. That's usually how much an IMAX or 3D screening costs.

The Menagerie looked great when it was screened in my neck of the woods. Didn't look pixelated or sound bad to me. The entire episode was stunning on the big screen.

I don't think we are advocating them charging more due to them spending more.

I have pretty much in each major post I have made about overall BluRay pricing, stated that this set is per episode fairly typical for off network series.

ORiginal releases sales of off network shows generally are more expensive then original release network productions.

Compare TNG 26 episode to the original release of Walking Dead, Sherlock, Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Dexter, Downton Abby, PAcific, Band of Brothers, Boardwalk Empire, ect, ect all have higher per episode cost then network productions.

Which is reasonable as live broadcasts on average still pay higher amounts for network programming then cable or syndication programs (and has always been the case).

Even most cheaper network fare is still out of the starting gate discounted to normally close to $50 for 22 episode seasons. Again which is generally much cheaper then off network shows.

The price per episode at 80 for 26 episodes is right in line with the majority of off network productions. Not more not less.

In fact its far more reasonable proved in relationship to other off network shows, then what the majority of modern Trek was when they were released on DVD.

There seems to be a large number of people who either aren't aware of how much more off network programming goes for in home market sales, and that since this show has been released on another format previously it should be much cheaper, which frankly makes no rational sense.

Between the apparent lack of awareness of the average cost of off network bluray sets, people also seem to be comparing them to DVD sales. In a way that makes me wonder how aware they are of the overall bluray market.

The reason I mention that excessive costs related to this versus 99.9999% of every other home release is to show that expected a low price is not really sound thinking.

Anyone pre-ordering from the UK - HMV currently knocking 20% of all Blu Rays until midnight tonight. Just use the code H8BLU20 at the checkout. Ordered mine, comes to £41.60.

Also don't forget, if you got the sampler disc, there should be a leaflet in the box which tells you to send a copy of your receipt (including an online receipt) along with a tear-off slip to a freepost address, and you get another £5 back.

Season 1's effectively costing me £36.50. Nice.

I mentioned it in the pricing thread. But I use Top cashback too, who do 5% on HMV at the mo, so its costing me £33.80!

Come to think of it the Cashback paid for the player too!

wow. thank you for this key big of information. It is a shame that a 2k projector cannot show this.
    I will not be going.

Cinemas doing special events need to use the highest quality projectors for them to get me to spend my money to go there.
Soon 4K will be what feature films will standardize on for a number of years.
back in 2005 it started with
Digital Cinema Initiative Distribution Master (DCDM), Version 1.0
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Cinema_Package
With Blu-ray having 1080p I expect the cinema to have 2k or 4k.

I'm impressed by the ingenuity shown at getting the price down that far. I feel really stupid now for paying at least £60 for each of the original Region 2 DVD sets given that the picture quality is so shitty. I think I'll feel less guilty for paying £50 for the Blu-ray version. Ah well, at least the local charity shop will benefit from my old sets.
