We all know that Battlestar Galactica takes place in earth distant past. Why don't we make that part of Star Trek universe past

The new Star Trek series could focus on what happened after the event in the 2009 movie where Romulus was destoryed by the supernova. The new TV series would be set in the late 24th century.

We all know that a large part of the Romulan empire is set in the Beta Quadrant which is relatively unexplored by the Federation.

The Romulans survivors could head further into the unexplored reaches of the Beta Quadrant in order to reestablish the Romulan Empire and discover the 12 destoryed colonies of the Colonial Humans there. Unfortunately they also run into the Cylons Humans who attack & capture the Romulans colonial ships and then adapt Star Trek Technology like shields, transporters, replicators etc etc... The Cylons Humans are still religious fanatics even after all these years and after adapting Star Trek technology into their ships, they then proceed against the Humanistic Federation. They intend to destory their mortal enemies, the Earth Humans.

I propose this idea for these reasons

    1) BSG and Star Trek do have their own fan base and plus piting religious fanatics Cylons against the secular/humanistic Federation could offer new plots and story lines to be explored. The combined and overlapping fan base could help with the ratings.

    2) Since the new villians (cylons) look exactly like humans, this could cut cost in the Make Up budget. Sci fi Shows do cost alot due to CGI, Make Up and Site Design. So cutting cost in the Make Up Budget is a good thing.

    3) The Cylons humans seem only interested in Earth humans as they see them as mortal enemies and so we could have certain federation members planets like Benzite and Andoria leaving the federation as the Dominion War had considerbly weakened the federation and they don't want another war. The Vulcans could also leave the federation as they want to help their cousins the Romulans rebuild. The aillance with the klingons falls apart due to internal politics within the empire. So basicailly that leaves the Earth humans, and the few aliens friends they have left, to battle the Cylons humans

    4) The Cylons use new type of human clones to inflitrate StarFleet and Cylon robots to battle StarFleet. The Cylons like to use fighters against their enemies like what we saw in BSG. We could have interesting mix of battles involving Aircraft Carrier style operations of the Cylons and Captial Ship operations prefered by the Federation.

    What do you Think?

I propose this idea because i really want to see a new Star Trek Series on TV hopefully on a Broadcast Channel or on SyFy Channel in order to reach the widest audience as possible. But BSG is owned by NBC Universal while Star Trek TV franchise is owned by CBS and that could be a problem i guess CBS can buy the BSG franchise from NBC Universal who are not doing anything with it at all.

Maybe a future series could just feature a new Enterprise that has slipstream fighters and have a couple of the characters be pilots. Otherwise, no need to borrow stuff directly from BSG.

I've done a Youtube Star Trek story featuring themes from Babylon 5, Alien, Alien Nation, and Solaris so far. I don't see why I can't keep ripping off other franchises as I go so BSG is certainly on the menu. :borg:

BSG takes a fundamentally different view of the Universe than Star Trek. The BSG Universe is virtually devoid of animal life beyond the Colonies other than the simplest forms, and literally devoid of intelligent life other than human and Cylon (and, eventually, culturally primitive humans already living on Earth).

I thought about the same thing as the BSG universe is barren of other intelligent life but i believe i got an answer for that.

The last events of the reimagined BSG series was set 150 000 years before our present time. So we could reason 150 000 years ago, there were not that many spacefaring civilizations in our space at that time. The vulcans, klingons, bajorians and other early space faring people that went to space before us (earth humans) were still in a very primitive state.

So reasonably IN BSG time period, there are very few spacefaring civilizations at that time, Hence the colonials humans and cylons seem all alone in their part of the galaxy. We are setting the cylons/colonial humans civilization in the distant reaches of the Beta Quadrant, where there are perhaps very very few civilzations in the first place.

That addresses continuity trivia, but not the fact that the tone and vision of BSG - which included the less romantic, "barren" universe - is incompatible with the more pulpish and old-fashioned Star Trek.

This proposal simply involves beating BSG to fit into the old Star Trek framework, and doesn't really do Moore's show any honor or show it respect.

It will work. We could recreate altogether a new background. We do not necessary need to use the cylons model but maybe a star trek version of cylons. New enemy species, new background but same type of religious vendatta.

I like the version of the original Battlestar: Galactica where the Galactica reaches Earth in the 19th century, they defeat the Cylons once and for all, Commander Adama settles down in Nevada and begins building a new empire......

Well I would rather have a new stand alone BSG and a new stand alone Star Trek than the mix of two ... I'm huge BSG and huge ST fan, but don't want the amalgam universe ...

No, it won't. If you make it like Star Trek, you lose what makes nuBSG good. The two shows are incompatible in tone, theme and philosophy. Just playing continuity games in order to sling around character names and use cool spaceships from BSG doesn't make it worthwhile.

It might work as a one-off out-of-continuity comic book special or a fanfic. But if you scrutinise it a bit, the two franchises really are incompatible, BSG basically being the black sheep of the family founded by Roddenberry Trek.

You could make an argument for BSG existing in Trek's Mirror Universe, though.

BSG the original series and the reimagined series were quite different.

The original series cylons were another rival race while the reimagined cylons are human clones and human created cyborgs.

The original series had a lighter tone compared to the reimagined series and did not have the strong religious ovetones of the later series.

The older series used lasers effects for weapons fire while the newer series used missile, shells & rounds (i call bullets rounds as that want we are trained to call them in the military which i had served in before).

The older series had a much larger convoy of over 200 ships while the new series had perhaps less than 100 ships following Galactica.

If the old series and new series can differ so much, I am sure changes can be made to the reimagined BSG to "fit" Star Trek.

I am only offering solutions to help restart star trek on TV. BSG was perhaps the last true sci fi show we had. So If we could find ways to adapt the reimagined BSG series past to a Star Trek series future, then we could have a winning formula to keeping the Star Trek franchise alive on TV.

We don't need to copy the BSG series. We could create a scenerio where humans evolved on other planets and some of their descendents settled on earth and mixed with earth humans but the other planet evolved humans had other descendants who hate us for some religious reason. And since the new enemy only seems to hate humans and is quite powerful, The united federation of planets collapses as planets leave the federation to avoid facing the new enemy and only a few aillies remain like perhaps the vulcans.

StarGate had a similar angle with the Ori and Ancients races thst seperated due to religious differences. The Ancients created Earth Humans then get into a conflict with the Ori.

I can think of plenty of more compatible franchises (or more interestingly incompatible) than Star Trek and nuBSG.

Let's start with the biggie: Star Trek vs Star Wars. So fundamentally incompatible that they pass each other like ships in the night, so ironically, they're not incompatible at all.

Who's to say the Force doesn't exist in Star Trek, too, only nobody's figured out how to harness it? And the Federation could teach the Republic a few lessons in how to create a working, viable political system that isn't fatally dependent on an inherently undemocratic cadre of warrior monks.

If you want to pair up nuBSG with something, I nominate Firefly. Their political sensibilities are similar - skeptical of authority - and they share a no-aliens cosmos, where the only inhuman species are those that humanity has unwisely concocted.

And then there's my favorite: Farscape x Stargate. Farscape could use a dose of real-world relatability and Stargate could use more imagination and zing.

But tell me what is the point? I really really think there will be more upset fans than happy ones with a move like this. Right now we are talking about nuBSG ... So to make nuBSG fans happy, you should BSGlize Star Trek with a more complex story, usually not for a broad audiance, and make it more depressing, more real. If you want to make Star Trek fans happy on the other hand you should cheer up the BSG part of your idea. There is little common ground between the two series, except for the fact that they are both space ship based TV series. In my point of view your suggestion is something like suggesting to bring together Buffy the Vampire Slayer with True Blood, they are both about vampires or maybe you should mix together Love Boat with seaQuest DSV as they both happen on the ocean ... I really really do think that we are talking about two so different universes that they are incompatible in their nature. Maybe both of them are fan favorites, and 80% of the two TV series fan base is mostly the same, but that doesn't mean that the two would work as one. What we need is a capable show runner with a great idea that could bring the universees of BSG or Star Trek to the masses not just for the niche audience, and mixing the two together would not make them popular to the masses, most probably genre fans would hate the too ... I would that is for sure.

Maybe the star trek franchise do need a little darkness in its theme. I came to star trek through voyager and voyager was perhaps the most light hearted show among the various live action star trek series. But from what i have seen among star trek fans, DS9 was perhaps more popular and it had more of a darker tone to it's theme.

If Star trek fans want to see another long running star trek show on tv, perhaps we should adopt the darker toned approach of BSG.
The idealism of the earlier star trek series need to give way to a more darker approach.

How dark it might get would be determined by where it ends up. On Showtime, pretty dark. On FX, dark and very violent. On AMC, dark and arty and violent. On TNT, lighter and less violent, not much worse than you'd see on broadcast. SyFy - nah, they don't do space stuff.

Every channel has its audience to appeal to, and they will expect any new show to generally fit in with their existing tone.

Dark not necessary better. Even though I agree that DS9 was darker and it is fan favorite, but rating wise this wasn't reflected as it should have, as DS9 could never enter in TNG's footsteps. What would help in my opinion, and what is successful right now are standalone episodes/arcs, with an ever growing mistery in the background. Just watch the current successful scripted shows: LOST was a hit, right now Person of Interest, Once Upon a Time, Game of Thrones, Spartacus nearly all of them are presented episodically as stand alone stories, yet all of them has a bigger scope in the background, mostly some unfolding mystery also heavy character development. In my opinion that is what Star Trek should too in a future TV series if they want to be successful, not the dark tone is the important but the composition of the seasons/stories to server not only the episode but the bigger scope too. nuBSG was dark in tone, but it also had all the above.

What about StarGate SG:1 and its spinoffs?

Most of the StarGate SG:1 universe happened within our present day one was simply kept secret.

And the backstory for the StarGate system would account for why so many human appearing races are located around the galaxy.
