People who saw previews of the art and read articles and interviews with the creative team?

Ummm.... everyone? When all of the New52 pre-release stuff was coming out. I saw some criticism over the new look and attitude of Superman.

The operative words were the use of the past tense, implying that the negative reactions were all in the past.

When I saw the early release stuff it didn't bother me at all because even without reading about it I figured it had to be a proto-suit before he became a true costumed hero/learned his Kryptonian heritage.

^ Gotcha. :) I kind of have come to like the proto-suit over the present day suit...*shrugs*, although I have warmed up to the suit just not the high collar and boots.

I'm not a big fan of the "present day" battle suit either, nor am I fan of the proto-suit. I'd like to see a more traditional-look Superman suit. I mean it's been more-or-less the same thing for nearly 80 years why change it?

Oh because it looks like "underwear."

Thanks for making some sense out of it.

(I made a post yesterday, but it's gone now.)

Yep - it looked foolish. That's why it's gone in the new movie, too.

I like the new suit much better.

He doesn't wear the jeans in the Perez book, which is the book I was discussing.

And, yeah, he's a little surley and cocky but that showed up some during the late 80s Byrne era too.

Byrne's Clark had a boy scout-ish crush on Lois from the moment he saw her. There really never was anything too interesting going on there from a story point of view.

Yeah, I'm so used to the new Superman suit now that the trunks on the old suit now look sillier than ever to me.

And not only that, but the old suit just looks so plain now. Considering we're now in the 21st century, they really needed to add some detail to that thing.

The darker blue helps as well.

What does this being the 21st century have to do with how plain or not-plain ones clothes should look? Are clothes today that much more detailed than they were at the time Superman was created nearly 80 years ago?

Anyway, the new suit/battle armor he wears now in the comics is fine. I've made my peace with it, but I still have no problems whatsoever with the old, classic, and traditional suit that served Superman well for his entire existence.

Well, if you ask the fact that something has stayed the same for 80+ years, is a perfect reason to change it if you get a chance.

The art in comics is much, much more detailed than it was then. Hadn't you noticed?

You know this discussion about the suit which I guess somehow came out of mine and Dennis's debate about the quality of story and writing in "Superman" got me to thinking...I wonder if the drastic redesign has anything to do with the lawsuit? Does anyone know the current status of it is? Perhaps this is DC's way of removing themselves from the original designs?

If they are trying to remove the original influences, they are not doing a very good job since they have the Y1 Superman in Morrison's Action Comics who is drawn heavily from the original.

That's very true. Not to mention Morrison's take on the character harkens back to the original version as well. It was just a thought that popped in my head that probably can be dismissed.

Plus I can't imagine the lawyers would be satisfied with a few slight cosmetic changes like removing the trunks or adding some segmented armor. They'd probably want to lose the S shield, the blue/red color scheme, etc.
