You are aware of the benefits your lifetime gives you ...............right? Check out CO. Lifetime members get a monthly stipend plus gold access on top of that.

It might work out better for LTS this way, now they get a monthly stipend to buy CS items whereas before you had payed for your LTS and then you still had to pay more for stuff from the C store......and all the other features that LTS will get free access to, that normal monthly members will no doubt have to pay for now that its going F2P.

Yes, the stipend equals a permanent discount on C-Store content. And permanent gold membership is permanent unlimited in game content. Unlike free silver accounts, which will have as yet unknown restrictions to in game content, not full access to everything C-Store and no stipend.

Re: Star Trek Online goes "Free to Play"

Agreed a new thread for this justfied, since it will interest people who don't play yet because of the monthly cost and thus don't bother following the general STO thread.
If it turns out to be a bad move to change to FTP it will be for heavy intervention from Perfect World. I think it's most likely Cryptic will adapt the Champions Online modell.

One thing that apparenty is lost in the huge, but incredibly polite, transcription is the "hidden gem" that Chinese players will get their own version of STO, leaving the current game for the rest of the world.

This may mean that the current STO may end providing ridiculous revenue while the Chinese version provides the lion's share of the earnings. We may want to be careful with this one.

We are talking about a 1.3 billion population. Even if just 0.01 percent of it plays STO, it would represent a "niche market" bigger than the rest of the world.

Anyways, that's good news for me. I had to drop the game because I could not afford to pay for it (I'm unemployed) AND because the fun/money ratio was not keeping up. If I can play for free, I might tolerate certain behaviors on the devs' and execs' part.

^^I hope all thats true...there has been a lot of stuff i had wanted on the C-store but no way was i paying those crazy prices and even more money........so a nice monthly allowance to buy stuff from the store would be great.

Especially since you can let it stack up to get the expensive stuff.

And you can trade in game currency for c-points as well then, which am personally not so thrilled about ( whole new can of worms), but would be helping you as well.

I suppose that would be the one GOOD thing to come out of it. I resented paying that much money for the game, and then them trying to nickle and dime me to buy things in the C-Store if I wanted any of the 'cool' things they were releasing. Especially since there's been a huge break in new game content, but the items available for purchase just kept rolling out. A lot of them were interesting, but couldn't justifying continue to throw more and more money after these things.

Getting a stipend to buy some of them each month would be a plus...

Having read the CO matrix for f2p, I'm not sure that this is going to change much for me. I think that come March next year I'll be contemplating a lifetime subscription again.

Probably something you should consider getting especially if they do the paying accounts get 400 C-store points a month thing.

Re: Star Trek Online goes "Free to Play"

It's not just the stipend (which is worth about 7-8 Dollars per month I think?) It's mostly the ability to play with all customization options and no more restrictions and caps then we have now.
You can't translate the biggest restrictions from CO (freeform heros) to STO 1:1.
SO it will be interesting what the limitations will be.
    Possibilities:
No mix and match of career and ship class
no alien creator, just preset aliens like Vulcans and Trill
Maybe a bridge officer cap of 6. Just enough to man every console on the biggest bridge.
    no foundry access
    only standard Cryptic original uniforms
    only type 8 shuttlecraft/runabout access

More than "no Foundry access", my guess would be "no Foundry authoring access". You may play the missions, but not make them.

Hesitated to merge, but then there were two threads activley talking about the same thing, so merged them. If f2p is a new conversation in itself, will spin off another thread? Dunno about interest levels.

I don't imagine this board population will speculate as wildly and with as much hand-wringing as the players over at the STO official forums, so I'm not sure a thread dedicated specifically to the F2P discussion would be needed - at least not until Cryptic Studios has been authorized by Perfect World to start its real announcement with FAQs, etc.

Maybe, though, it would be worth closing this thread down and relaunching a new discussion thread, a la when threads got too big in the past. My suggestion would be "Star Trek Online Discussion (Going Free-to-Play!)" or something similar; that way it would encompass both general discussion, as well as contain a subject line-level notice about the game's impending new status to garner attention from anyone not already paying attention to the game who would be interested by that and want to discuss it.

Gotta admit, they did wonders on the new Borg command ship, from the blaster beam tone when it shows up to what happens if you get hit by the 12th power plasma torpedo with your shields down.

Definitely. The only reason I didn't do it this year was because I couldn't get the the cash together (I was only just able to make the annual sub).
