Part of me wonders if the achievement thing means they're prepping for a Steam/XBox version of the game. Seems kinda pointless though when there are so many other things in the game that need expanding on. (how about more uses for dyes damnit!)

Gold - Well, you can use four pieces to make a clock, but other than that, meh. I ended up just dumping all of mine in a box at the center of my pyramid next to all my collected bones. :)

Creepers - Just pretend you're playing a fps and keep your situational awareness high. They do tend to go away later in the day though. At least above ground. Fortunately craters are at least easy to fill back in. Just keep a big pile of dirtblocks and a couple of porkchops on hand for quick recovery.

TNT - Be careful though, as it tends to blow up resource blocks as well.

Spawnpoint - Always make it a point to make note of any landmarks. Also making 2 block stacks in otherwise flat areas is a cheap way of marking your path. I also like to set down blocks of cobblestone with torches on top to act as guides back to my house.

I can't remember my first encounter with a creeper and how I learned that they explode, but the earliest memory of one that I can recall is the time I exited my wooden shack one morning and there was one right there, and it blew the side off my house. That's when I decided to upgrade to cobblestone.

And I was lucky because I spawned on a peninsula so I never got lost, I could always just follow the water back to my house. I remember that on my second day I was desperate for coal so I made the dangerous trek to that valley that's a minute away from my home to look for some in the cliff-face. It seemed like such a huge deal at the time, but now my fortress walls almost extend into that valley and the cliff-face where I got that coal has been replaced with some nice grass. It's amazing how powerless I felt back then and how powerful I feel now. And how super-powerful I'll feel once I have torches all over my landmass and I can walk freely at night from one end to the other without fear of harassment.

That may take some time, though. :vulcan:

Hey, maybe you guys can help give me ideas for my lower castle levels. I'm going to do fairly traditional castle stuff once I get it built up to that level, but for now I'm filling in that 50x50 footprint.

The bottom is my glass pool. One level above that, I have a room lined with flaming Netherrack. Not sure what to put in there. I have enough room for maybe 5-6 more levels. I think one should be a library and another should be an art gallery. Do you guys have any ideas? I was also thinking of making a "Nether" level filled with things you find only in the Nether, complete with a portal. I also thought of making a desert level with sandstone and such. I am willing to entertain just about any idea, and each level can be some arbitrary height in blocks.

You can check out my world to see what I've got at this point.

Hmm, monster spawner maybe? Big dark room with running water channels that sweep zombies and skeletons toward a center pool thats underneath a skylight? Maybe add a glass tunnel or ladder so you can go in and harvest the arrows and feathers?

    Underground tree farm?

In other news, hey check it out! Quick and easy poles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r02K_o6aKgs

    I made myself a lampost. I'm so proud. :)

You could make a lava level with lava on the floors, walls and ceilings behind a layer of glass. But a full 50x50 room would need at least 5,000 lava source blocks, so that's probably not feasible. :vulcan: If you use an inventory hack you could make a giant ice-rink.

Hmm, I like the idea of lava walls, though. I might do that!

A spawner level is also a good idea.

I'm not gonna cheat to do any of this, so it's gotta be things that are feasible to do legitimately.

The advantage with lava blocks is that if you do it right, a single source block can spread out to create seven vertical blocks. So you'd only need something like 20-30 to go all the way around your pit.

1.4 (the one with wolves) are out. I've spent a few Minecraft-days looking for them but haven't found any yet.. :(

I prefer glass. I built my home in the side of a cliff, with a big glass wall overlooking a field strewn with torches. Nothing sneaks up on me. I only wound up building a fence in front of the house yesterday because I got tired of hordes of cows mooing at my door while I tried to work on things. Yes, I'm more worried about cows than creepers.

Note that they only seem to spawn in forests and taiga, so you won't find them elsewhere.

You should be prompted to update, but you don't have to take the update if you don't want to. If you play online, you should make sure the servers you play on have also updated or you won't be able to play on them until they do! Bukkit servers do not support 1.4 yet (since it just came out today).

Hey, cows can be annoying. Especially when you have a waterfront base...

Aww man, with a new version out, my custom skin pack doesn't work anymore. I'd forgotten how ugly the default game textures were. Gotta wait for the creator to release an updated version. :(

Glad to hear you've gotten hooked. I've started to get bored a couple of times, only to start a new construction project and get addicted all over again.
Yeah you definately want to put nice big windows near the front of any entrance. Monsters seem to be attracted to doors.

Oh, and if cows are a problem, try removing any stray torches, or sticking a few off in a field. Animals seem to cluster around lights during the night.

I don't really like to build block houses out of wood and stone; I just prefer to dig into the side of a hill, add a door and the entrance, and I'm happy. It makes it a bit harder to find but it looks better.

Did the 1.4 update fix the snow? It better have, or I'm going to have to threaten notch with a diamond sword

EDIT: Mobs killed by the sun now drop the items that correspond to them, like feathers for zombies. I'm pretty sure that in previous versions if they are burned by the sun they didn't drop them. This'll make wolf-taming much easier (provided I can find some) because bones are now dropped without the risk of being shot at! Also some creepers exploded near my house, but the newly-refurbished cobblestone reinforcements prevented the worst of it. I'll share some pics of the aftermath and my new lava-fall as soon as photobucket starts cooperating
