I don't know if this is necessarily news, as rumours of a Buffy movie without Sarah Michelle Gellar or Joss Whedon etc have been bouncing around for some time. But now it seems to be official, with an announcement by Warner Brothers that the world of the Slayer is to be rebooted for the big screen.

Yes, fans are awaiting the character's return. But they want her to be played by SMG, saying lines written by Whedon, Greenwalt etc. Who's betting that this is going to be some Twishite, Vampire Drearies rip-off, devoid of all the wit, humour and drama that fuelled the now-classic tv show?

Exactly. I have no interest in seeing this world return if it's not with the exact same cast and writers.

What is the fucking point of this? The show hasn't even been off the air that long! What's next, canceling a TV series and then rebooting it the very next season?

I shouldn't joke, since things like that actually do happen in the world of TV (seaQuest 2032, for example.)

The strangest things about all of this, to me, are that BTVS would be called "classic" and would get a cinematic reboot. After watching the original film (just once, so painfully I never touched the series), I never would have thought something like this would happen. Must say something about the quality show, though.

I remember when the news first came out last year that the Kuzuis were planning a remake. I thought it was a horrible idea then, and it still is. There is no Buffyverse without Joss.

Can they get Billy Piper? :D

Okay, yeah, it'll probably be that girl from Heroes.

The Buffyverse is perfectly suited to spinoffs without rebooting, and unlike many franchises they could be spinoffs that could feature new characters and stand largely alone and not get too insular for casual viewers. So it'll be especially disappointing if they go the reboot route instead.

Quite true. I would much rather see the universe continue in the form of a spin-off.

Knight Rider 2008 did something similar. Half the cast was cut midway before being canceled

Words cannot express what a BAD idea this is. I have the same feeling of impending dread I had about Alien 3:rolleyes:

I don't use the word classic lightly but I genuinely believe that it can be applied to BTVS. Yes, the original movie was pants and it - and the very name - put me off the tv show but once I gave it a chance, I was hooked. You should give it a try.

Making money by using a pre-existing property to cash in on a current craze.

This has nothing to do with the TV series. Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui produced the original 1992 movie (along with Sandollar Productions), and thus they own the rights to the Buffy character. They were credited as executive producers on the Buffy and Angel TV shows because of that ownership, but they had no involvement in the shows beyond getting paid for the character's use. And now the Kuzuis have optioned the rights to the character to a different set of filmmakers, people who had no connection with the TV shows.

Also, I think you misread the news release; this is a feature film reboot, not a new TV series.

I did, several times, to confirm it.

    (Emphasis added.)

That description leaves me wondering if maybe this is meant to be a sequel to the '92 Kristy Swanson film.

Already stated my opinion in the first thread but yeah ultimately not interested in this if Joss isn't involved.

I think perhaps I will. Once I clear my plate a bit. Once I do, I'll be sure to post my thoughts here -- it'd be cool to get some feedback. Besides, even with the terrible film and silly title, there really must be something to all the fuss that's made about it. ;)

It's funny that the Wizard of Oz remake is pointless if they copy the 39 film but BTVS is pointless unless SMG and Joss are involved.

The only thing that might interest me in this is hearing or reading Joss's thoughts on this once it comes out. Otherwise I'm not planning on seeing this when or if it comes out.
