Since the picture thread got a little side tracked with all the different references to alcohol, namely, martinis i thought i would post a new thread about booze. So this is to discuss what you like, don't like, what you'd like to try, blah, blah, blah, etc. As for me, i love martinis. Gin with olives. Also, i enjoy scotch. What about you?
I'm not much of a beer drinker but I'm developing a taste for stuff like Chimay, Pacifico and others. I'm more of a cocktail person. I really like Disaronno amaretto, screwdrivers, rum punch... I don't really care for wine outside of white zinfandel which tastes like soda pop. I have developed a tolerance for it though so I don't mind drinking it socially.
Extremely dirty vodka martinis, Gs&Ts, and margaritas are my most-consumed drinks. However, I'm mainly a beer person, preferring the darkest, maltiest, smokiest stouts out there.
I'm mostly a beer and wine drinker. Developing into a bit of a snob on both fronts, I must admit... heh. Never cared much for martinis, cocktails, liqueurs, etc. though. They've just never really appealed to me.
I prefer dark beers like Guinness. For liquor there is nothing finer than a glass of whiskey. Bourbon is the best, but I like a good Canadian whiskey as well. Mixed or clean, it doesn't matter too much.
I downloaded an awesome drink recipe app for my iPod Touch, and it had an intriguing Guinness recipe involving cream and cinnamon.
Is your abstinence from alcoholic drinks a temporary thing (say, for health or weight loss) or more permanent?
The only way I'd drink gin is if it was the only alcohol available and I had to perform an emergency appendectomy on myself. It's the only spirit that I simply detest.
A man after my own heart. Scotch, single malt, preferable highland, neat. I'm a huge martini fan (and by martini, I mean gin or vodka with a touch of vermouth -- none of these fru fru flavored drinks in a triangular glass) with an olive, twist or onion. [James Bond]shaken, not stirred.[/James Bond] Unfortunately, though I like gin martinis, I've learned over the years that they decidedly do not like me. So, I've had to switch to vodka. Which are almost as good, as long as the vodka is good; plus there's the benefit of no hangover. I'm also a big fan of wine and good beer. Oh, and a nice, smooth, sipping tequila. Some rums, and boubon's nice for a Manhattan, and I was recently introduced to "real" absinthe, with the whole ritual of the water decanter, slotted spoons, sugar, flame .... Do I have a problem, you think?
Actually, the classic way is without flame. Cold water over a sugar cube placed on the spoon, with the dissolving sugar allowed to create a translucent louche in the liquor.
Yes. I'm not sure when this whole "flaming absinthe" business got started, but it was definitely never done before the ban. For myself--I think the quickest way to answer this topic is simply to list what I've got in my fridge and liquor cabinet. 4 bottles of Maudite strong ale 2 bottles of Grolsch lager 1 bottle of Remy Martin XO premier cru cognac 1 bottle of Hennessy VSOP cognac 1 bottle of Hennessy VS cognac 1 bottle of Montal armagnac 1 bottle of Taboo absinthe 1 bottle of Pernod absinthe 1 bottle of Navan liqueur 1 bottle of Cointreau liqueur 1 bottle of Bulleit bourbon 1 bottle of Wild Turkey 101 bourbon 1 bottle of Dubonnet aperitif 1 bottle of Kingsgate sherry 1 small bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin 1 bottle of Stolichnaya vodka 1 bottle of Zwack eau de vie d'abricot 1 bottle of dark Creme de Cacao and 2.5 bottles of wine Hmm. That actually makes me sound like a much heavier drinker than I am. The reason I have so many bottles of booze around is because it takes me so long to finish them. I've been working on some of those bottles for years now. For example: I bought the bottle of Remy Martin at Heathrow airport a year ago, and I've had exactly two drinks from it.
I'm glad classic cocktails are making a comeback. Classic meaning old recipes dating from the 19th and early 20th century instead of the merely trendy. Excellent article here: The Cocktail Renaissance
I can't say I ever really liked alcohol. The only tastes I really liked were fruity drinks like Cider or Bartles and James. I occasionally enjoyed certain kinds of margaritas or a Midori Sour. I can't stand any kind of beer and I am am not much for wine although I like white more than red. In college it was necessary to get drunk a lot to overcome my Social Anxiety though so I developed some standards. Bourbon and Coke. Gin Martini's. Shots were mostly tequila or whiskey. I liked Goldschlager a lot but mostly to give to people who have never had it before to see the look on their face when they drank it. I don't really drink anymore ecept for the occasional cider and my girlfriend wants to become a sophisticated wine drinking couple.
