Bryan Singer, acclaimed director of such hits The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, and director of the first two X-Men films, has expressed interest in returning to the franchise, after abandoning ship to helm Superman Returns. Brett Ratner took on the reigns for what eventually became X-Men: The Last Stand, and when asked if Singer had any regrets, this is what he had to say:

He was also asked about returning to direct the next proposed spin-off in the franchise, X-Men Origins: Magneto, especially now that it finds itself director-less after David Goyer (who had been originally slated to direct) is apparently off the project.

It should also be noted that 20th Century Fox, after burying the hatchet with Singer for leaving to direct Superman, offered him the opportunity to helm the X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off that went to Gavin Hood. Singer cited he was too busy working on Valkyrie at the time for why he turned the project down.

Personally, while I think the Wolverine film would have highly benefited from his directorial abilities (for one, it would have likely been more in continuity with his first two films - which it was trying to do in the first place), I think the proposed X-Men: First Class film would be right up his alley.

Maybe he should make X3 and ignore the Ratner movie.

Make a sequel to the first two entries in a series and ignore a subsequent film, just because it was of lesser quality? Nah, I can't imagine Singer would ever do something like that...

    ;)

Found himself no longer Hollywood's favourite child after Superman Returns?

    Hah!

I'd like to see Singer get back to that LOGAN'S RUN remake he was talking about a few years back . . . .

Hardly. As a producer, he's been busy working on his television series House, developing an adaptation of the graphic series Freedom Formula, directing a WWII movie in Valkyrie, which took a considerable amount of time due to filming constraints (for example, Germany initially wouldn't allow Singer to film in certain locations; whole reels of film were lost and destroyed during filming).

As a director, he's circling the most touted Prisoners project starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, apparently one of the most sought-after scripts in Hollywood.

^ It's not an adaptation of THE Prisoner, if that's what you're worried about.

me too! I just rewatched the second one yesterday & its a shame he didnt direct the 3rd one in the first place. Id have to watch the 3rd one again since I hadnt seen it since it first came out in the theater but I remember dispite liking a couple things(Beast was good) feeling disappointed, it felt so disconnected and "off" from the first 2 films.

The guys who did X3 were told by Fox that it was the last X-Men flick, so as a result they had to resolve Singer's Phoenix cliffhanger while merging it with a proper "finale" story for X-Men (Joss Whedon's Cure story from the comics). All this in a 90 minute movie, so it was all rushed to heck with nice ideas that weren't given proper time to develop.

^ Yeah I remember hearing that explaination as well. Also I think Ratner and Zak Penn in the audio commentary stated that again. I've said it before and will keep saying it because I think we were going to get an awesome finale to the X-Men Trilogy from Singer. I wouldn't mind seeing him do the proposed X-Men First Class film.

Well, without Wolverine around maybe he won't constantly shaft Cyclops.

Tell Singer to go away. I dont want anymore mutant angst. I want some impressive battles by someone that actually knows how to shoot a fight scene. Have the X-men take on the Hellfire Club with Ian Mcshane as Sebastian Shaw.

Beast & Mystique steal the film.

That's the only compliment I can give it.
