Maybe it's because of my age but I have both my parents and my siblings and my inlaws on Facebook. I don't see why not, I'm not doing anything I'm ashamed of on there and it's a nice way to share what I'm up to and pictures with family.

You can easily block your mom from seeing most of the things on your page. This is what I do with old teachers and my little brother who have befriended me.

I'm glad Facebook removed the requirement that you had to be in college to join; otherwise I wouldn't be able to use it. I didn't have an account while I was in college, so I missed my chance.

It's been a nice way to catch up with friends I haven't seen in several years.

Ah yes Facebook, or Identitytheftbook as I like to call it.

QFT ... I've done the same thing. Found many old high school friends. Saw some of them at a reunion back in 2002, while others weren't there.

I only joined FB because I heard a schoolfriend was trying to get in touch with me (my first big crush). Since she got to hear from me (probably a bit too much) and the fact she's a bit of an Xian fundie, it's stopped. Sad in a way, meh in another.

The weird thing is I got a whole bunch of befriend requests (or whatever they're called, from girls I went to primary school with. Why weird? Because I haven't seen these girls since 1970! That's out there!

Oh, they chatter on, and are quite pleasant, but it's... I dunno. The people themselves, I stress, are okay, and it's kinda fun to be taken down Memory Lane and mugged. I think the whole way FB is set up with those silly bloody kidnap games and crap, is lame. Staying in touch with people is fine, I just wish there was a 'cool FB'

(So if you're a programmer, there's a market going begging! You can have that idea for free!)

    Don't even think about Twitter.

Tried it for networking in my business and got some attention. I recieved lots of requests for features and apps. I got fed up and now it's gone.

There was. It was Facebook 5 years ago before it got popular and bombarded with way too much extra crap. Also, they didn't change the format every 6 months.

^^ And both of you nailed exactly what's wrong with FB.

Keep it simple, keep it clean, don't overbuild it. Set it up with the basics and a few extras, and leave it alone.

If you build it (and stop), they will come. :D

^Exactly, but TPTB over at Facebook don't get it, and every time they change the format it gets a little worse.

It's impossible - because cool people are out doing stuff, not talking shit on the internet.

Eh, not really. Considering just about everyone I've ever met is on Facebook...

Changing the format or layout really bugs me. Most people who use networking sites that I've encountered say "I like MyBook because it isn't loaded with crap like Beballs." And then MyBook realises Beballs has something they don't then try to copy them.

It's like the Talent Moat episode of Larry Sanders. But with the internet.

At first I hated the "new" design they implemented a few months back. But there's one good thing I like about it; it seems to have got rid of all those shitty application all the idiots had.
Or at least people have stopped using them anyway

ie. feed my fish! I'm a vampire! Zombify me! etc, all that bollocks

Would it help if I said that several of my friends are on Facebook and are pretty successful ultra-marathoners? I think that counts as "doing stuff".
