The first scene in "Wink of an Eye" has Scotty recording a ship's log entry. But what we see doesn't match the other shots in the episode:

That communications officer obviously isn't Uhura, and Scotty's hair is the early-third-season style that James Doohan reportedly hated (it was gone after a few episodes.)

A few seconds later Kirk is speaking with Uhura (whom we see) and a few minutes later Scotty's hair is different.

Maybe the Scalosians were trying to distort our senses, too.

Season 3 had another library shot of Scotty in engineering with the slicked back hair and it was still used after his hairstyle changed.

    Not exactly repurposed footage.

It's a scene grabbed for (but not ultimately used in) "The Empath."

Sorry, but it is "repurposed" because it was shot for one purpose and used for another. It wasn't "re-used".

Maybe Scotty left the bridge, had a shower and restyled his hair whilst the crew were down on the planet! Dried himself off and quickly got back in time for the crew to return! Strange how Kirk didn't say to Scotty, "Hey,nice thatch, Scotty!" when he got back to the ship!

Good closeup of Bill Blackburn in the OP though.

Understood. I think not everyone who read "repurposed" might have understood that the scene shot for "The Empath" never actually appeared in "The Empath." (Some readers might actually have presumed "repurposed" meant "reused.") I know the difference; I wasn't convinced all readers understood the subtle differences and implications

Scotty would have given us the finger for this thread. If he still had it, I mean.... :p

It always annoyed me how they played the episodes out of order in season three especially with Scotty's changing grey and black brill cream hair! What were they thinking? Why not have all the black haired ones first followed by the grey later?

Anybody else see a striking resemblance between Bill Blackburn and Brian Gross?

And all to save a few hundred (or thousand?) bucks. That third season was tight.

Money may have been short, but they never stopped finding inventive ways to hide Doohan's missing finger. If that shot didn't make it in the episode it was filmed for they had to use it somewhere, considering the time and expense of a camera set up just to hide a finger.
