New 'Star Trek XI' Pictures

The most recent issue of Empire Magazine has been released and there are several new Star Trek XI photos courtesy of the magazine.

As reported by EmpireOnline, the recent issue of Empire offers new Star Trek XI photos, including a cover shot of Zachary Quinto as Spock and Chris Pine as Kirk.

There are two single shots of Spock and Kirk, with Spock in Science blue and Kirk in black. The photos can be enlarged to show greater detail.

The other set of pictures shows: Spock in front of the Enterprise viewscreen, Kirk in an armored EVA suit, and Zoe Saldana in a red dress.

The article in Empire includes an interview with J.J. Abrams. In part of the interview, he discusses the challenges of making the 1960s boldly-colored uniforms palatable to today's audiences. "For me, the costumes were a microcosm of the entire project," said Abrams, "which was how to take something that's kind of silly and make it feel real. But how do you make legitimate those near-primary color costumes? How do you make legitimate the pointy ears and the bowl haircut? It's ridiculous and as potentially clichéd as it gets. How do you watch Galaxy Quest and then go make a Star Trek movie?"

To read more and see the photos, head to the articles located here and here.

Saldana is smokin' hot! I've had a thing for her since PotC: CotBP, and can't wait to see her do her thing as Uhura.

I haven't been this eager to watch star trek since the Undiscovered Country.

I haven't been this interested in TOS-based "Star Trek" since "The Wrath Of Khan."

Or maybe even since waiting for ST:TMP.

You know, I got kind of a gay vibe off of that image, too -- not that there's anything wrong with that -- but in more or less replicating the publicity still of Shatner and Nimoy, they forgot to tell Quinto in particular to try not to look like he's trying to be seductive. Compare the more benign expressions in the original to the update. It looks now like Spock and Kirk got a little something-something going on.

And why does JJ Abrams keep pulling this snarky Gen-X thing of crapping on the very thing he's trying to resurrect? If it was that bad, why redo it at all? So far, the retro elements are the only things that make the movie look remotely interesting and distinguishable from the bizillion other generic spaceship flicks on the DVD shelves. The funny thing is that a lot of what he says about the costumes is at odds with fashion today -- for instance, I have a blue, form-fitting V-neck sweater with a black T-shirt collar "insert" I bought more than a year ago at a trendy store and that bears a striking resemblance to the slightly modified uniforms in this film. Had I not got it so long ago, I would assume it was inspired by the costumes shown here. The jewel tones of many Star Trek costumes also are popular colors in clothes.

Kirk and Spock look uncomfortably close...

And it's even more uncomfortable given that fact that Kirk is giving us that boy-band half-smile.

Also, lighten up on the color saturation! These neon uniforms make Starfleet personnel look like Power Rangers. If anything, trek needs to take a lesson from the grittier postwork in BSG and Firefly if it really wants to compete.

The only image I like so far is http://www.empireonline.com/images/i...w800/30305.jpg <--- this one. That makes me think the movie is more interesting than the god awful advertising campaign for this movie.

Because both Kirk and Sulu are checking out the guy on the left?

Isn't that the whole point?

Anyway at least that magazine cover isn't horrifying like the Ewwww one.

Heroes has wrecked him forever. Star Trek slash is supposed to be of a more subtle sort. On Heroes, the fun is seeing just how blatant they get about it.

That's how I feel as well. Both TMP and this movie are beginnings of sorts, and seeing the original crew for the first time in many years.

I'm psyched. I think this film will be a fun ride.

I like the picture of Spock on the bridge; is this viewscreen actually transparent and not just a monitor? because you can see the hull at the bottom.

Game on!

Though I have to say I'm with most people regarding the publicity stills. The movie stills are way cooler, because they look so real.
