Fuller Wants To Create 'Star Trek' Television Series

Bryan Fuller is serious about wanting to create a new Star Trek series for television.

As reported by IFMagazine.com, Fuller has already spoken to people and made his desires known on the matter. "I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams team I want to create another 'Star Trek' series and have an idea that I’m kicking around," he said.

Fuller first mentioned his desire to bring back Star Trek to the small screen in an interview last month located here, where he said that he felt that Kirk, Spock and McCoy should remain in the movies. "You wouldn't have to be on the same ship or have the same characters as the original 'Star Trek,'" he said, "but you could be in the same timeline and universe. 'Star Trek' has to recreate itself. Otherwise, all the characters start to feel the same. You always have a captain, a doctor, a security officer, and you have the same arguments based on those perspectives. It starts to feel too familiar. So all those paradigms where it takes place on a starship have to be shaken up."

What was missing from the newer versions, according to Fuller, would be restored if he had his way. "I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved 'Voyager' and 'Deep Space Nine,' but they seem to have lost the '60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin."

Not nearly as much as I miss new episodes of Trek on TV.

You're kidding, right? Fuller's doing quite well for himself.

With the consistently good material he's been putting out, he's almost a junior Joss Whedon. Except without the tendency to stomp on his fans' hearts when they're most vulnerable. Or the rabid anti-fan club.

No, I'm not.
From what I read about him two of shows, Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls, have both been cancelled, with Pushing Daisies not doing to well.

And continue to go through the bi-annual multimillion dollar crapshoot?

ENOUGH!!

Star Trek was created as a television show, and it's on television where it's always worked the best.

The movies are nice events, especially if the movie is halfway decent, but the format is a television format. It should stay there.

Oh, I think I see what you were saying. Yeah, it's nice when your work is financially successful, and brand names help with that.

Point stands that creatively and critically, he's doing just fine.

Re: Fuller Wants To Create 'Star Trek' Television Series

Brian Fuller has a wonderful sensibility and in combination with the right people, he would create a terrific Star Trek series. Heroes had some charming elements when he worked on it in S1 - heart and humor particularly - that decreased noticeably when he left to do Pushing Daisies (which runs on humor and heart, no coincidence there).

Heroes
is still a thrill ride with great characters but I'm still noticing that something from S1 is missing. PD seems doomed (boo hiss) so Fuller either needs to get his ass back to Heroes and help shore it up by reinvesting it with warmth and humanity, or help re-launch Star Trek on TV. Either would be a worthwhile endeavor.

And Lee Pace, Kristen Chenowith and Chi McBride should be outfitted for Starfleet uniforms, pronto. We're not losing them!!!

What Fuller needs in his writing/production staff is what he had in S1 of Heroes - the people who can create thrill-ride plotlines, who can delve into darkness and insanity (PD is a bit too nicey-nice and toothless), who can whomp up a kick-ass battle every now and then. Returning to the TOS style of bright cheery fun is great, but some DS9 darkness would create a perfect mix.

Not if he's counterbalanced by people who can provide what he lacks - the nasty side of life. His sensibilities are strong in the warmth and humanity department but he's got to realize that unless there is a very strong dramatic bite, something serious at stake, the audience is going to tune out. His approach is too light. He needs people who can serve as an anchor to keep him from drifting right up into the clear blue sky.

I've missed good "Star Trek" since 2005 - but frankly, "Star Trek" doesn't need to go back to TV right now. It makes much more sense for the studio to limit the Franchise's exposure and make each new "Star Trek" a big film event.

When and if the (hypothetical) film series flags, they can look at TV again.

I could see a cartoon series for the kids or something. I don't know if we're quite ready for another big expensive TV series again just now.
