Brooks To Play Loman

Avery Brooks will appear as Willy Loman in a "radical new interpretation" of Death of a Salesman.

As reported by Playbill.com, Sisko, best known for his role of Captain Benjamin Sisko on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Hawk in Spenser: For Hire, will play the unhappy salesman.

According to the press release for the play, the production will "will step beyond the margins of standard-issue color-blind casting, boldly embracing nontraditional casting that incorporates the race and ethnicity of the actor into the role he or she is playing. All members of the Loman family are African-American; the woman with whom Willy has an affair is white; and the characters of Charlie and Bernard are depicted as Jewish immigrants who fled Eastern Europe during the rise of the Third Reich."

According to Director Justin Emeka, "If the American theatre seeks to be more inclusive and representative of our country's diverse population, we must learn to explore the classics of American theatre through diverse cultural perspectives."

Death of a Salesman will be performed at Oberlin College's Hall Auditorium, in Oberlin, Ohio, from September 18th through the 21st.

"radical new interpretation"
What's the point? Why not simply write a totally new play? I give it a week. Max. Sorry.

Re: Brooks To Play Loman

I love Avery Brooks, I think the man's a great actor, really dug him in DS9 and in American History X, but isn't doing Death of a Salesman a bad sign for an acting career?

I would like to see this when it is presented. I think Brooks will be significantly better than Dustin Hoffman.
