Star Trek XI News Bullets

  • Anton Yelchin's Chekov won't be going to any planets in Star Trek XI, but will be "hanging around with aliens on the Enterprise" and will be sitting on the bridge "screaming about Romulans" according to the Daily Record.

  • Speaking of Romulans, TrekMovie.com is reporting that the Star Trek XI Romulans will be bald, at least partly to distinguish them from the Vulcans. In addition, they will not have the forehead ridges seen on Romulans from the Next Generation and beyond. One of these bald Romulans was seen in previous spy photos fighting with John Cho (Sulu). Another object seen in the spy photos was something that looked like a ship, but is allegedly a "drilling rig" being used by the Romulans and that it is being used in an attempt to destroy a planet. The rig can be seen here.

  • Roberto Orci spoke recently with IGN.com, where he said that not only was Star Trek XI an origin story, but, contrary to usual practice when making an exciting first film, "it's an origin story that's...We didn't save anything for later." Orci explained that, "We wanted to make sure that it was great for the fans, but a general audience, they're not going to be able to rely on that they love Kirk or they love Spock. They have to love it on its own merits."

  • In another IGN.com interview, J.J. Abrams was somewhat intimidated at first when directing Leonard Nimoy. "Well, the intimidating thing was going up to him and saying, 'Here's what I think you should do,' because I'm like, 'Who the hell am I to tell you what to do? You're Spock!' The truth is, he would literally grab me and say, 'Look, tell me, tell me, tell me.' When I say he was a sweetheart… Working with him was like working with the greatest person you'd ever work with. He was just open and curious and hungry to be better and that ended up being a pure joy. I love Nimoy."

Well, there goes canon.

Uh, aren't they adhering to canon by not having ridged-forehead Romulans?

If you're going to quibble over makeup choices and disparities - a whole lot of Trek is out of canon...

Good bye stupid head ridge, its been long over due.

Wasn't "Romulan Ambassador" bald in STVI?

As long as they don't look like they are wearing cheesy bald caps I don't care what their foreheads look like.

Skinhead Romulans? Meh...okay. I'm game. How come Schinzon popped into my mind.

Anyway...my question is will the crew know they are Romulans? Apparently so, it seems.

Sounds great - yeah, it may contradict "Balance Of Terror" but that's the way the canon crumbles.

May, may not. They managed to pull it off on Enterprise, they might do it here.

Even as a huge fan of TOS, I don't really care though. As long as it doesn't suck.

Well, no offense to "Balance of Terror", which I enjoyed immensely, but I always thought it was lame that they had "never seen them".

Sometimes canon needs to be broken. Besides, it's just a TV show.

I'm glad they won't have the forehead ridges TNG gave them. As for the crew seeing them and knowing they're Romulans, we'll, we'll just have to wait and see to judge.
